Hi there,

Were back from our trip to Portugal and we drove about 6000km.

One Thing:

We used a lot of oil. About 30 liters total

Is this normal for a MB 911 from the year 1972?

Hope to hear from somebody.

Thanks

Tim

No - I thing an oil consumption up to 2 Liters is the regular of 1.000km.

Dear Tim,

I suppose you have changed your air filter from an oil bath type to another type ? (as you are selling one oil bath filter...).

Are you sure that all the joints of the new air filter are absolutely tightly sealed, where they go into th cylinder head cover ?

If this is not 100% air tight, the engine might suck oil from the cylinder head cover and eat it, as you are using 5 l / 1000 km.
Check the old air filter to see how deep the pipe must fit...
Try to run the car with the old airl filter and see if it still eats that much oil.

Have you ever checked the compression of the engine on all cylinders ?

Is the air compressor OK (-> this question has been discussed before) ?
These compressors sometimes cause a lot of oil consumption ...
I also have an old 911 with OM 352X - no Turbo - 130 HP from 7/80 with 70.000 km on it and I drove it now for ~ 4.000 km and have almost no oil consumption.

Best regards,

Udo (DL 8 WP)

If the oil consumption is caused by the air compressor, then you should find the oil when dewatering the air pressure tank.

If the oil is burned, then the engine makes blue smoke not only during warmup but almost every time.
As far as I remember the Mercedes engine does not have valve stem seals. If the simple valve guide is worn out the oil is also burned.

regards,
Christoph

2 Liters would be fine, but my calculation says that they consumed 5 Liters per 1000 km. This sounds a little bit hight, but is no reason to panic.

High oil consumption doesn't necessarily mean that the engine will soon fade away. My good old Audi 80 consumes about 1 Liter and this has not changed over the years. The kilometrage is now close to 400 000 km and the engine is still fine. This is a lot for a gasoline engine.
