MB 1222 leaf springs

#1 Beitrag von Heering80 » 2020-11-12 12:26:16

Hello,

How have you dealt with your trucks leaning too much towards either end? The front leafs on my 1222 are quite saggy, and the rear seems to be very high. This doesn't look that nice. I contacted the local truck spring specialist, and was quoted 2-3000€ for the job.

How does this sound to you? Are the prices any different for example in Germany?

Riku

It was a fire truck with a 2000 l water tank and some usual fire brigade structure.. Now there's zeppelin box with some furniture.

I guess we need to start saving money then :(

Thats intresting, normally are the leaf spring after more than 20 years distorted. How many vm is the difference between front and back? Someone mounted flat washer between keaf spring and axle using longer springband.
Something like this

or this

The difference is roughly around 10 cm or so. The car is over 30 years old, so that might be enough to distort the springs.

Hello Riku

First I would weigh both axles on a vehicle scale, to now their actual weight a compare it with their maximum allowed weight.

If the front axle is not overloaded than probably you can think about replacing the spring leaves... If overload on the front axle than you should make them stronger...

There are many shops (in Germany) where you can buy original and custom spring leaves, i'll give you some address if you like.
If you replace them by your self you could save some money.

Thank you Max. Do you mean that after measuring, I should compare the results to the numbers on the registration papers to see if there's over weight?

If you have some places for springs in mind, then I would appreciate if you could point one out. It might not be worthwhile to write a comprehensive list of shops, since I currently can't afford to buy them anyways.. But it would be nice to be able to ask some price examples anyway.

Yes, you weigh the load on every axle and compare it with the axles' max. allowed load that ist written on the vehicle's papers... so you know if the axles (and the leaf springs) are loaded at 50%, 90% or 110%, this will help you to know what to do next. You can also see if the load is well distribuited between front and rear axle...

I'm in a similiar quest with the rear axle's leaf springs of my van.
I wrote for some quotes and the most competen answers came fro this two adresses i'm going to send you as a private message.
Of course both are german, I suppose the speak english too... you tell them the VIN of your car and what part you need (if you need harder, softer or original Springs) and they can send you a quote.

I wish you good luck,

Max
