My first trip to Germany
Dear fellow old timer enthusiasts
My family will drive our MB 1965 LA911 from Kiel to Fulda area (and back) in July.
Max speed is as you know about 75 km/h. What route would be best for us (and courtious for other motorists) for this stretch?
Any special "must visit" for people like us along the route?
If we should run into any technical problem that requires assistance along the route are there any particular recommendations?
We're so much looking foreward to the trip an any advice or recommendations are greatly aprechiated.
Thank you in advance!
Svein

Re: My first trip to Germany
Hello,
wellcome to Germany
at first some questions:
- how much time do you have for this trip?
- do you want do do some sightseeing - old cities, nature, museums, parks, zoo, castles, climbing, swimming, what else ? Whitch of these?
- "familiy" - how old are the children?
you will see more from Germany driving threw if you use the smaller Bundesstraße (B and Number) instead of Autobahn (A an d Number) - and it's maybe comfortabler because the other trucks will not drive in near distance behind you... (Truck trafikkork bak deg)

Re: My first trip to Germany
Hey Svein,
if you are interested in cultural events as well I'd recommend visiting the Burg Herzberg Festival, taking place in the Fulda area from July 19th-22nd. Apart from a line-up and audience which generally fits the age and style of your truck, there's usually a bunch of folks from this forum around
Plus, it's a very child-friendly festival, should that be an issue.
In past years it has usually not been a problem to buy a ticket directly at the venue, but you can also buy in advance through the usuall resellers (eventim etc.).
If you have some time to spare, you could deviate a bit from the direct route Bärbel suggested and eg. visit the Wendland area, basically going by smaller roads along the Elbe river from Hamburg to Dannenberg/Elbe and proceed from there into the hinterland. Picturesque area with an interesting politcal history...
Cheers,
Matze

What you can do in advance is have a look at the "Mitgliederkarte" which shows you the locations of other forum members.crimson911 hat geschrieben:If we should run into any technical problem that requires assistance along the route are there any particular recommendations?
If you need assistance, let the forum know. In the past, members have been extremely helpful and I'm pretty certain they will provide help whenever they can

Fulda: a must-see is the fire fighter's museum: http://www.dfm-fulda.de/
Have a good trip!

Re: My first trip to Germany
... Autobahn (A and number) marked in the map red and yellow are fine to get fast from A to B , but you will not see a lot ... average speed using full speed of the truck and no steep hills 70 km/h (valid for Hanomag, which is a little slower then your 710)
... Bundesstrasse (B and number) marked in the map usualy red (if big) or yellow (if smaller) are very fine for truck drive ... they are simmilar to norvegian E-roads ... the red ones will usualy not lead thru towns and villages, the yellow ones will ... average speed 50 km/h
... other roads marked in the map yellow ... ther were some non-B-roads also ... you can dirve them without problem, they are wide enough to pass the traffic from other direction without breaking ...
... if you have plenty of time, drive roads marked in the map white ... they are often quite narrow so you have to slow down at "Gegenverkehr" ...
... have a nice trip in germany ... and if you are used to drive on norvegian roads with the truck most of the german roads will bee very easy ... but the traffic is much heavyer ...
Gruss Ulf

Re: My first trip to Germany
Hi all, thank you everyone for your kind advices. We are driving to Fulda for the only purpose of attending the Burg-Herzberg festival. We visited this event back in 2005 , fell in love the event, and have "planned" to be back every year since, however this is our first time back since then. The "kids" joining us on this trip are ~23+ something.
I will keep to the Bundesstrasses and we have allocated two days for drive down to Fulda and the same back to Kiel. Ferries puts special "stress" on trips like this; you just have to make it.
Looking forward to meet some of you...
Thanks
Svein

Re: My first trip to Germany
Hi Svein,
you shouldn´t pass Hamburg. If you avoid the A 7 with Elbtunnel it will take about 2 hours to cross the city. Better head east via B 404 to Lüneburg and then south. There is a very friendly towing-service in Handorf (near Lüneburg)
!
