Dauert leider noch was.

Did you made more progress on this? How did you or plan to solve the steering rod? As your pinion is now lower than it was before? It will hit original steering rod?

@Ainis: No, I did not finish the job. My car is still away in repair. Propaly I will not have the time to finish the 4x4 retrofit. Was a nice Idea 3 years ago, but I am running out of time.

I found your thread while googling about T2/vario 4x4 conversion. There is no 4x4 front axle for sale, only few ruthmann cargo loader axles are available, but they have the same problem - drive shaft spins to the opposite side than 4x4. You clan flip the diff, like you did, but then the problem of steering rod happens. Also VG550 transfer case seems to be very expensive. Only affordable solution seems to be ruthmann axle with magirus 2 shaft transfer case, but then it would only be RWD or AWD with no center diff. Also, now, the rear axle would require flipping.

@Anis: I dont get your point with the steering rod. If you are talking about the conecting rod between left an right wheel, for this rod I have a drawing from Iglhaut. This is a simple solution. The rod between Steering gear and left wheel can be adjusted.

Yes, im talking about the conecting rod between the left and the right wheels. Willing to share the drawing? Does it go over or bellow the pinion?

Hey,
I had the same idea to use a Ruthmann axle on my 508D. Has anyone ever built this with magirus transfer box? In my opinion a RWD/AWD without centerdiff is not bad for a trip. Saves a bit of fuel and actually has not much disadvantages.
But there are also Magirus 2-shaft transferboxes with centerdiff. 170d11 for example.

Another Idea was to use Robur axles/transfer box....

My solution in the end was to buy a small (3.09m wheelbase) LN2 1120AF....

best regards
Constantin

Most of the ruthmann axles are slow - 4.11 and higher. EPC shows that the rear axle ring and pinion fits, but i have no Idea from what axle. Possible small one (6 bolts half shafts). It also shows that the diff cover is the same as the one on the rear axle, but I haven't seen the rear axle with the same cover...
Do you have a picture of magirus 2 shafts transfer case with a center diff? How to recognize it?
No idea about robur axles, but some guy from russia used gaz66 axles with a transfer case. But again, the axles are slow, something around 5:1 and the transfer box is tinny compared to vg500 or vg550. Only plus, it is cheap...

Hey,
same problem with the Robur axles. They are very slow so you need an overdrive between gearbox and transfer... or big tires.

here you can see a magirus twoshaft with center diff
