Multiple 170D11 questions

#1 Beitrag von BlackHammer » 2019-02-16 4:06:19

Hello all, I have been reading this forum, asking questions and using google translate whenever possible but alas there is some information I'm not finding so I thought I would gather it all here.

1. I'm trying to understand the Strasse/Gelande lever in the truck. I'm understanding it as essentially meaning Road/Offroad so I'm assuming this is high gear and low gear? Does it do anything else like lock the centre differential? Also, I can't figure out how to use it. Do I stop, press the clutch, gas, lever, etc etc? I found this thread: viewtopic.php?t=33634 but google translate is not helping me. I'm trying to not break anything so help here would be great!

2. The diff-sperre knob/button near the Strasse/Gelande lever. I'm assuming it is the differential lock? Again, what does it do exactly? locks transfer case front and rear differentials? locks only differentials? locks transfer case only? And what is the proper way of using it? I've had to use it to plow through 1.5m of snow to get out of my laneway (yay Canada... ugh why do I live here?) and the light stayed on for a long time even after "turning off" the differential lock.

3. Where are my rear shock absorbers? I was looking at possibly lifting my truck with lifting blocks between the springs and axels, so I need to put longer shocks in. I found the front shocks. but I don't have rear ones? It's a 1981 170D11. Is this normal?

4. My auxiliary heater is broken. Any links of where to find compatible parts?

5. The front wheels are narrower than the rear wheels with 120ET wheels. I'm hoping to find some spacers. Any links on some I could order online and ideas on proper sizing?

6. I want to mount a cabover sleeper on the roof of the CAB. Any ideas where the strongers points are? Ideas on how to mount it?

Hello, do you have nice car.

To 1.: When you want to change to the Slow range put the switch to slow, don'T use the clutch and than beam high, not very quick, but quick till you feel the 170er is in the slow range and goes ahead again.
To return to the fast range, no gas, put the switch to fast range, step the clutch, count to 7, leave the clutch an the 170er will run fast again. You can do it on road and off road, Best gear for that is the 3. or 4. gear.

To 2.: only with the switch "diff. -Sperre" you lock the diff (erntial)in the transfer case only. Not in the axles. With auf locked diff you can only drive off road without destrying anything. For the axle may be there inother switch, but it's not a must.

To 3.: fire fighter cars don't have always shock absorber, may be your 170er was former once.

To 5.: I cut of the inner ring of old wheels approximatly 50 to 60 mm brightness and mount it Inside the narrower axle.

To 6. : Do you have auf single or auf crew cab?

For the axle may be there inother switch, but it's not a must. Thanks again, does having the axle lock light mean I have the option installed or just that it's a standard dash and they don't remove the light even if I don't have the option?

To 3.: fire fighter cars don't have always shock absorber, may be your 170er was former once.It was indeed a fire truck

To 5.: I cut of the inner ring of old wheels approximatly 50 to 60 mm brightness and mount it Inside the narrower axle. Great idea! thanks for the input.

To 6. : Do you have auf single or auf crew cab? firefighting 9 person cab.

Thanks for the input. It's not always easy working with an imported vehicle no one locally knows much about.

Here she is a few weeks ago, all dirty and grimy, covered in road salt after a 700km trek across Germany, a transatlantic boat ride and a 1500km father-son road trip through Canada:

Bild

And here are my rough plans for the time being, just so you know that I'm not just asking random questions and not doing anything with it:
Bild Bild Bild Bild Bild Bild Bild Bild

I start doing prep work tomorrow inside the cabin, I'm going for a complete refit and adapting the current layout to my family's needs and the fact I plan to travel 1+ year with a family of four inside the truck.

Here's an old design of which I may reuse the cabover box and combine it with my current design.

Nice Story, you imported it from germany yourself  , very good idea.
The lock light ist always monted, so you don't need prepare a new light, when you install later the axle diff look yourself. The axle diff lock switch is a black round switch to pull with a diameter 30mm, may be between the seats or under the Armaturenbrett.

On the drawings it looks like auf 3 room flat, really large.
It looks good.

Which heater do you mean? In Front of the cabin Outsider, or Inside? Inside is an oilheater it uses the hot oil from the engine.

The columns in front and in the back of the doors are good points for fixing auf topsleeper . Do you like to enter the topsleeper thru the cabin?

I mean the auxiliary heating with seperate on-the-dash controls (supposed to be a separate diesel heater).

Thanks for the mounting recommendations. The columns end before the roof, however. Maybe I should extend upwards the columns by welding some tubing in place?

Yes, we want to enter through the cabin.

Hi Blackhammer,

I think a cabinbox is a great idea. I want also one.

But a few years ago, i read i this Forum, that the Magirus CAB may have some problems with a roof load.

Id i remember correctly, there was written, that some guys transportet there sparewheel on the roof, and a few Thousand kilometers later the cab was damaged due to the roof load.
Source:
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=56678&p=540486&hil ... 2A#p540453

In short: the guys there said, the Magiruscab is the wrong choice if you want a cabinbox.

Also to keep in mind: the load of the front axle. If you have a cabinbox, the sparewheel attached to the front and some other heavy things, it is easy to overload the frontaxle.

Thanks for the advice, references and information. I’ve got an additional question:

I only have one differential locking pull button in the cab. But... there is an air line going to the transfer case (central differential) plus another airline going to the rear differential. The front differential has no airline leading to it. The truck, although registered as a 1981, was built in 1979.

Knowing this, is it possible my pull knob activates the central and rear locks? I only have, as it turns out, one single indicator light showing the central differential in the cab. I can upload a photo if needed.

May be the Magirus had original only the lock for the transfer case and later an owner monted only the diff lock in the axle and an additional line from Transfer case to the axle.

Maybe... but the Magirus only had a single previous owner before the person who sold it to me: the fire department.

The seller did not add a locking rear differential.

Here are photos, it’s hard to tell on these but there is an airline going into the differential on the driver side:

in the last picture there is in the center of the picture a arcuated vent valve. Nearby that valve ist the diff lock in the axle with an airline to the grid. Like Ulf wrote, there are only brake part in the pictures till now.
In the Front of the Cabin is a haeter like this .
A possible heater could be an "Eberspächer D1L"

… and I'm designing my electrical system and just realized the stock 28V 750W alternator is too weak to run electrical Air Conditioning while I drive.

Anyone know of a direct-swap alternator in the 2000W + range?

Thanks!

Haha, yes. My colleague who has a Leyland DAF T244 camper is jealous of the rear locker

On a side note, it's pretty interesting that there are actually a few european allrad-LKW expeditionsmobiles here in Ottawa.

Also, I just ordered 5x 395/85r20 Goodyear MV/T tyres. 90% tread. $875 USD TOTAL (not each!)

... I couldn't say no to that price!

Do you know the model of the alternator?

Also, I am currently having my 395/85r20 tyres installed on the truck (mmmmm, oh yeah!) and my new top speed will be 110km/h (just a bit under, actually).

I think I need a new gear for the tacho? Where can I order one of these? currently the truck has already had the tacho fixed for the 12.5r20 tyres the former owner installed.

Thanks for the information!

Also... HELP!

I just hit a major problem: My truck is at the shop to have Goodyear 395/85r20 MVT tyres mounted. Currently it has 335/80r20 continental MPT 81.

Truck shop called and said they refuse to mount the tyres because the lip on the wheels (flange) is smaller than the flange on the goodyears.

I'm looking for specs on the wheels so I can check to see if I can find some north american ones that will fit. Or... where do you get wheels that fit the goodyears for magirus trucks in europe?

To mount 395/85R20 on this Truck you need 10X20 Rim , 8 Bolt Offset 120mm . I told you several month ago . 11 X 20 SDC Rim is the wrong dimension for 395/85R20 . I would also refuse to mount tyres on wrong rims.

Hi Oliver, the issue is that the spare wheel is not the same design as the other wheels and I was measuring the flange on the spare wheel. Also, I misunderstood some of the points, apologies. Also, Goodyear has released the tyres for use on 11-20 wheels. The flanges are not the same on the spare and truck tyres and I obviously am doing this for the first time and will make some (costly) mistakes. Oh well... :wack: It's only money.

I found a local fabricator who can make some custom wheels. Not split, ready for tubeless! Has done it before :

He has the parts ready to fit on an IVECO 90-16.These are his custom wheels:

Bild

Are the wheels the same for both trucks? Information I have is:

8 bolts
275mm bolt circle
8.7 inch center bore
20mm studs (bolts)
0.9mm stud hole (bolt hole)
11" wheel pad (mounting surface)

Anyone know if this is the same on 170d11 trucks?

He will customize offset so that the front and rear tracks are the same.

there is a difference between 11-20 and 11-20 SDC Rim .

The Rim on the 90-16 look like 9-20 Rim from Star 266 (Poland) .

some notes to one of your pcitures. You shoot this picture from rigth side of the truck standing beetween front and rear axcle. Please supply pic from left side eighter.

blue marked: part of the brake (not axcle locker). Distribution of brake fluid towards the 2 braking cylinders at wheel. The hose might end in an valve for modifying the brake pressure in accordance to rear axcle load. Means: if spring says "totally loaded" the full brake pressure will be applied to tht cylinders. If spring says "not much loaded" the pressere will be reduced to avoid slipping on rear axcle.

red marked: air ventilation of the axcle. If this point gets under water, water/dirt will drain inside the axcle and pollute your oil. If you might reach deeper water, you should move the upper part to a higher position.

your rim problem: listen to OliverM !
your old rim 11-20 SDC fits to tires 335/80r20 MPT and 365/80r20 MPT ( but not to 365/80r20 trailer !! same size but no mpt tire ). This rim has a 1inch shoulder.

Your new tires need a rim with a 2inch shoulder, i.e. 10X20 or 10-20V. These rims are probably not easy to find in right dimensions.

i would not mount tires to wrong rims! Safety issue!

Your initially list - point 5: I send an dwg to a workshop which lasercut spacers in the relevant thickness. But think about the sense of it.
pro "same distance": in deep sand/mud the car goes easier, less fuel
pro "front tires narrower": when driving to far to the side of the road your rear axcle will tell you first.

best regards Udo

Thanks for all of the information. I've ordered some new wheels.

Thanks for pointing out the axel vent.

I will be taking a photo from the other side soon. There is a tube that seems to connect to the air system on the other side.

I am probably not going to use a spacer to align my wheels together at this point unless I get extreme rubbing.

You should think twice about that. Sometimes the threads of the screws are too short to get tightened on the wheels whitout spacer. To explain this, I have inserted a picture.

Also, I have uploaded the photos of my differential from the opposite site for a better view of the other hose.
