Testing

Inspection:
Some rust on the drivers cabin (doors) and rims (at least one).
No rust under the front window nor foot well, due to new gaskets.

Some rust under the car, but no oil leakages since all simrings in engine, gearboxes and axles are changed.
Only noticeable oil I could see was on the (front) springs.

Driving:
Engine started momentarily due to good compression.
Slow axles, noisy engine, definitely underpowered.
It will of course help to put on noise killing painting, reduce weight and increase engine power.
Anybody knowing how much power is 'consumed' by the drive train?
That can help me imagine the effect of increasing to 130HP and fitting electrical radiator fan.

(Added 19/4:)
At some combinations of gear and RPM the vehicle got variable speed.
It went up and down about twice a second, making seating uncomfortable.
Is this normal for these cars?
If no, what's wrong?
If yes, will (air)suspended seats help?

Since the shaft to the right front wheel is broken, the front shaft didn't rotate.
The speedometer cable is connected to the front of the reduction box, hence the speedometer didn't work.
Does this seem correct to you?
What do people who mount free-wheel-hubs do?

You'll find some pictures here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/groentas/MB911Test#
I'm curious about the noise-reducing(?) panels in the engine compartment (first picture).
Anybody knowing what's behind?
Would it be smart to put on some rust preventive there, e.g. spray on/trough it?
Can I apply noise killing painting, asphalt plates or similar on them?
Or will that destroy drainage and create rust?

Hi Groentas,

thanks for the pictures.

From there my opinion: The bottom has not seen too much care.
Master Brake cylinder looks suspicious to me - no one seemingly ever took off rust, same with hand brake mechanism.
Car did not see too much grease.
I suppose some more surprises will show up when you have it. Be prepared for serious restoration work, if you want to put it in good condition.

The lower side of the doors is not beautiful, needs soldering work, if you want to keep the car long time.

The "ups and downs" from the engine can happen at slow speeds at certain RPMs, mine does it also sometimes - especially in traffic jams at very slow speeds and low RPMs kind of a "Bonanza effect".

For air susponded seats you will probaly have to modify the seat consoles below th seats. I have 2 air suspeded Recaros but not put in yet. I shall see how that will work.

Look here, scroll down for the pics.

For information on the wheel hubs for the front axle look here:

http://www.expeditions-lkw.de/index_ausruestung.html

click on "mehr" below the picture.

There you can also see what has to be modified to have the odometer work properly when the wheel hubs are disengaged.
I dont have these hubs so I can say nothing about it.

Besides that, Fabian has an interesting truck (Mecedes 917, ) Only the cabin is a bit short (3,3 m). But you might put your daughter to sleep in the big drivers cab (?)- then you have your privacy - but building in a bathroom seems quite tight to me.

look here:

I told you before the small 352 engine is not making a "Porsche 911" out of the Mercedes 911 ;) ...

But also the 130 HP Engine is also not really powerful, you will need some patience while driving.

In my opinion there are too many things to do / potentially to fix on the car for the price (I understood something around 15 k€ ?).

For the sound capsula in the Engine, you could take that out and put in something more effective. There is some "Buthyl Aluminium" sold in E. Bay, this is the stuff I will try.

Take your time to find the right car !

Best regards,

I do also think it's to much work, Udo.
If I felt the car was ideal, it would be OK.
But living in Oslo, I'll have to drive an hour to get anywhere. Thus I'll prefere high-speed axles.
With all the uphills I'll prefere a turbo to. I don't want to always drive in front of the Queue.

Regarding Fabians truck, I think 3.3m koffer is to short. Then it'll be a problem / hard job to get all the things which I want.

Truck

With the "Toll" taxes it would need to be a certain age and a camping vehicle.

80KMH is the national speed limit so no problem with the hills around Olso. :D
