Hello everybody,
I'm going to see one -85 MB 1222 double cab truck this weekend. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me wether this is a good basis for an expedition truck or not. Are there any major weak points? How does it compare with Magirus 170D?
I have planned to equip it with a Zeppelin FM2 box and bigger tires. Does anybody know what are the biggest wheels that can be used without modifications? What size would you use?

Re: Opinions on Mercedes 1222
Some people will probably tell you that Mercedes and Magirus can't or shouldn't be compared. Those who love their Mercedes will tell you that it's a fine vehicle and those who love their Magirus will tell you that their car is the best you can getHeering80 hat geschrieben:How does it compare with Magirus 170D?
Where are you heading? Are you planning a round-the-world-trip and do you want or need instant availability of spare parts?

Good choice, enough power, 100 % pneumatic brakes and I guess
permanent 4x4 with unequal power distribution ,two diff locks and
parabolic leaf springs. What else do you need ?
Six gears ? More likely are five.
Axles:
If it was the version with more than 90 km/h - perfect.
Check the papers for Vmax data.
If slower V max can still be pushed by mounting wheels with higher diameter.

Re: Opinions on Mercedes 1222
Hi,
Probably most of my kilometers will revolve around southern Finland, since that's where I live and (have to) work. But every now and then we might do longer runs around nordic countries and middle Europe. We have rationalized this project so that it might be a fun way to gain knowledge of local areas, nature and history. My wife is in to history and museums and I like fishing. So there should be something for the whole family in this hobby. This is all very new to us, and actually I just got my truck licence last month. We have concluded that boats, traditional traveling (by planes) and normal camping vans are probably not our thing, so this is what's left I've got short history in off road hobby with a Volvo C303.
I guess in my use any Mercedes truck driven less than a million will do just fine.. As would Magirus too. This one that I'm going to see has diff locks on both axels, although that might be totally irrelevant.. Don't know about the axel speed ratings yet, but will check. Good point!
I will start a project thread somewhere when I have actually managed to buy something

Ok, now it's done. Found one relatively nice truck and bought it. This is my first step towards expedition camper ownership, and I feel uber happy and affraid at the same time
There is no diff lock on front axle after all..
