Valve setting (ventilen einstellung)

#1 Beitrag von Peterdenmark » 2015-03-27 19:17:56

Hi!

I am trying to figure out how to set the valve clerance on my 170d11 413V

I have the handbook and I have searced the forum intensively for tips and tricks. The problem is that I am not very good at german and google translate makes everything very hard to understand. But I have tried for several days!

So the question is:

In the handbook I read it as if there are 2 ways to set the valves:

1. way is to use the scematics and first find TDC for cyl. 5 (on the kurbelwell there is a small "tip" that marks this right?) With this you can set one or two valves on all cylinders except 5. Then you find TDC for cyl. 1 and you can do the rest of the valves according to the scematics? But where is TDC for cyl 1.? This does not seem to be marked.

2. way (as I read it) is to find TDC for cyl. 5 (both valves are loose) and then set both cylinder 1. valves. Then find TDC for cyl. 2 and set valves on cyl. 6.
Problem is that this does not work. When I have cyl. 5 on TDC (marking on kurbelwelle and both valves loose) then only one of the valves on cyl. 1 is loose.

I am at a loss. Can anyone explain what the best procedure is?

BTW I used the "jacking the wheel up" method and it works perfectly.

And a little follow up question:

If method 1. is the easiest then how do I find the TDC for cyl. 1? Cyl. 5 seems to be on TDC when the kurbelwell is on the top mark but cyl. 1 does not seem to be on the same mark.

Or perhaps I have misunderstod the the setting point is not when cyl. 5 is on TDC but when it is on "overlap"? I think the google translate messed this up.

Overlap if I understand correctly is when one valve is full open and the next valve is almost opening.

Hi Peter,

the tip on the pulley marks the TDC for cylinder 1. I think in the german Book was written something like "Überschneidung" or "überschneiden", that means that both valves are moving but both are in closed position. So one was open, but it´s closed now and the other will open right now. That is the exact position of the crankshaft you´re looking for. If you find that, you can correct the clearence to a right value. You need it for 2 cylinders. Maybe the 5th, i don´t know, only for the V8 F8l413f it´s the 7th that you will never find on your engine :D

I hope you can understand my poor english.

Dont hesitat to contact me for further questions. Tomorrow i will have a look in my book and give you more detailed information if needed.

Sebastian

Your english is no worse than mine, it is my poor understanding of german that is the problem :wack:

But from what. I can understand it is correct that I only need two "uberschneiden" to set all valves. That certainly makes it alot easier.

Hello,
you've inserted a valve setting diagram for the F 6 L 413!
Hope it helps you further!

Hello

I think I got it now. I was just confused about the "uberschneiden". I was looking for a way to find TDC but that is not important on a v6 I can see now.

Thank you for your help!

Best regards Peter
