Overland Ideas

#1 Beitrag von WOODSMAN » 2011-05-22 14:57:23

I had travelled around some countries of the world as a child and the travel bug has never gone away so having families abroad and considering the current economic climate here we are looking at making an overland visit to OZ/NZ from the UK/GB including some sea crossings and wanted to know from those with much experience of travel some basic info.

1. Which is considered the most reliable vehicle in the 6 -10 tons class? (this includes finding spares/servicing) I had considered a SWB MB Vario high van.

2. Most common breakdowns? (modern and old vehicles)

3. Best tyres in all conditions? (michelin XZY I know is good)

4. Is a 200 ltrs drum for fresh water enough if also using lakes/rivers for bathing?

5. Which countries have bad issues with officials and the natives towards overland people and wild camping?

6. When using freight vessels should one also travel on the same ship to ensure the vehicle is safe? (I once sold a 2A Land Rover to someone in the US and it's fuel and some spares were stolen when on Liverpool docks behind locked gates) :wack:

7. Suitable methods of cooking/heating? Gas/Diesel/Electric/Solar. (I have always used a small wood stove at work)

8. Vehicle Insurance Companies? (normal insurance seems not to cover more than 12 months abroad)

I'm looking at a scenic zig-zag route avoiding large cities and a basic low cost fitment of a vehicle. (not spending as much as a house is worth on a truck)

Thanks in advance.
