Magirus 170d11 Canister with ATF in engine room. What for?

I found this canister with ATF in the engine room. It was full of oil and had a new filter in. Can anyone tell me what it is for?

I also discovered that one of the screws that hold the engine coverplates fast is missing. This explains why there was a heavy smell of diesel when I drove home from Germany

Where can I get a new special screw like this?

Last question:

The top cover plate on the engine seems to be very thin an I would guess that it resonates quite a bit. Anyone experiment with dampening it, or is it a waste of time? :-)

BTW. The oil seemed quite thick so I cant be certain that it is ATF. The can just says so.

That is the reservoir for the power steering.


Cover plate screws should be normal metric screws, M8 or 10 I don't remember correctly.


Noise damping could be done more effectively at the drivers cabin, I suppose.

In my truck you access the engine form the cab (no kip) and the coverplates are held down with some special screws that "lock" them down. I will try to take a picture.

I know which screws you are searching, you can get them from Mercedes. They use them on the Actros, Actros MP2 and MP3 to fast the Engine side covers.
