Hello feex,

to make your 914 faster, you could:
1. use another gearbox with a faster gear - unfortunately such a gearbox that fits into the 914 is very hard to find or has to be custom built.
2. use other differential gears - new parts will cost about 2000 EUR per axle (price for Germany), you need two sets of parts.
3. use bigger tires - this is the easiest way, but depends on what tire size you are using now.

To change from alltime 4x4 to part time 4x4, you have to replace the transfer gearbox.
Why do you want to do this? Most people here prefer alltime 4x4.

2000e per one diferencial is very expensive..
tires : now I have there 9x22,5 double in rear axle ,want change for 12,5x20 single , so, it is not change speed too much propably..

I want to make part time 4x4 , because I think It would be beter on the road (less diesel and energy it takes, for example, if I want go to Maroco I spend from prague to algeciras 3000km on highway, so it is beter to drive just with 4x2, than on terain I use 4x4 and diff locks..

If you change the transfer gearbox for part time 4x4 the front power train will be driven by the wheels. Because of this you will have to install freewheel hubs to decouple the front power train from the wheels.
Freewheel hubs are very common at 4x4 cars but very rare at 4x4 trucks. They are available for the Mercedes trucks with hood like Pirx has one. Maybe they fit in the 914ak too.
This would save 1-2 L per 100 km. You have to decide whether it is worth to change the transfer gearbox and install freewheel hubs for a saving of 1-2 L per 100 km.

thanks for info, I were thiking about freewheel hubs for sure, but I didnt know if they are rare or not. also I thought that it will save 4-5l (4x2 mb 814 take +-16l 4x4 914 20-22l) if it save only 1-2l than is beter to do not change it for parttime alrad.

Change to 14.5 R 20 or 365/80 R 20

oliver : Isnt it too big? which changes I have to do in construction to change it for this size? In mercedes thay dont want to give me permision which I need for czech TUV :/
I thought that 12,5 is will be more friendly with the road (spend 70% on the road 30% on the offroad) and I is enough in offroad, but I dont have to many experience with it....

Hi Feex,

I also have a 914 4x4 permanent. With 365/80-20 max speed is 100 km/h with 2800.

My fuel consumption with permanent 4x4 ist aprox. 23ltrs but I hope to bring it down by 1 or 2 liters through improving the fuel injection. Maybe another liter through a more aerodynamic roof rack.

If it would be helpful for you for the czech TÜV I can email my vehicle registration card to you so that you can proof to them that these wheels are common on MB 914 in Germany.

To clear the space for the bigger wheels you have to cut parts of mud wing as well as the lowest step of the ladder. See picture below.
