Idea to place a motor thermostat on a Deutz Motor 110-17?

#1 Beitrag von Nico Magirus » 2017-03-29 1:27:53

Dear all,
I' m going to start a long travel from Brussel to Sydney with my 4 children
with an IVECO Magirus 110-17 BF6L913 // Mot Nr 7780776
124kW(s) // 2650 (1/min) // 3601/07

It is an air cooled Deutz diesel engine and I'd like to place a thermostat on the motor
to be sure to don't overheat the engine but it seems to be very difficult?

It will help me very much if anybody has a good idea to monitor the temperature of the engine?
Just a red-lighting button if temperature is too high will be enough!

Moreover, which is the normal temperature reach by this kind of motor and which is the maximum temperature tolerated?

Many thanks for your advises,

Nicolas

Idea to place a motor thermostat on a Deutz Motor 110-17?

Hi Nicolas,

a thermostat is something that keeps a temperature constant ('stat' for "static"). There are already two of them on your engine: one that opens the oil cooler above approx. 80 degrees oil temperature and one in the exhaust to control the fan speed.

I guess you are asking for a device monitor engine temperature: Every cylinder head has an mount with a M14 thread for a temperature sensor. As far as i recall it's on the intake side on a 913. Normally there is a full thermometer mounted on one of the rear cylinders connected to a temperature gauge on you dashboard. Thermo switches are also optional available. There are also options to mount sensors to gauge oil temperature close to the oil filter or on the oil cooler. Iveco did always provide a cylinder head thermometer on the dashboard, it must be in your truck as well. Normaly it should run between 90 and 110 degrees. In stationary it might even fall below 60. Higher temperatures only when doing excessive full throttle uphill in very warm weather. If the head temperature reaches 150 degrees you should choose a low gear to raise engine rpm and improve cooling.

Critical are temperatures above 180 degrees, but the engine will never get there without an error, no matter what the climate conditions are. In case you can bypass the exhaust termostat to aviate maximum cooling by taking away a washer under a screw at the thermostat. For details please refer to the owners manual or if not available to the engine manual. I'm unsure if Iveco will provide an owners manual but an engine manual should be easy available from Deutz company.

Air cooled engines are less sensitive to to environment temperatures and conditions of use because the are fan cooled just depending on engine rpm and the system operation temperature is more high.

Just make sure the cooling system is working fine (exhaust thermostat can be misaligned due to rough conditions in the exhaust on thisengines from time to time), cylinders and oil cooler are clean and the oil is filled up. And then the engine will perform way better in warm climate than we would do ourselves.

All the best,
Felix

Welcome Nicolas !
I am sure that you will find a lot of interesting information concerning your 110-17 here on the forum.
There are many real Magirus and Deutz specialists on board.
Let me just say that I am very impressed that you are undertaking this expedition to Sydney with 4 kids.
All the best Campo.

Welcome and have fun hear.
A Deutz- BF6L913 has a temperature sender unit on board. A kable ends at the back of the engine.
You will feel without auf temperature display when the Engine is to hot. The Power is going down and it can't run high beam. I got this experience in the sand desert with 45°C outside temperature.

Bernd

Many Thanks for the advices provided about the temperature sensor on my Deutz Motor 110-17,
We left on the 01 April and we are going to be in Germany these next days : Luxemburg, Merzig, Sarrebruck, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Ulm, Augusbourg, Munich and Salsburg.

Does somebody know a specialist that could place this type of sensor for my engine on the road?

In fact, I broke down 2 times 2 months ago in Germany because a Mercedes mecanic and a Scania mecanic both let the oïl cooler disconected. Upstream of the oïl circuit, they closed the system but didn't bridge/shunt the circuit. Due to this mishandling, the engine fan didn't turn (the 2 systems: oïl cooling and engine fan are linked) and the motor overheated ($$$) !

The problem was that I didn't have any light to alert me about this disfunction (picture attached)!

I am sure that this motor is good but I would be reassured with a temperature sensor installed in the engine and with a specialist check on this subject before I continue the travel to Australia!

Many thanks again if somebody can help the 'sixglobetruckers' in the next days,

Nico

Just to give some news about temperature and my Deutz engine...
Finally I didn't place any sensor (to late on the way!)
We arrived now in Kazaksthan without engine problem after 18.000 km and:
-Mountains at 3500 meters in Kirghistan,
-Mountains at 2500 meters in Iran and also in desert at 50°C,
-Turkménistan Karakoum desert,
-We drove with 62°C in Tashkent in Ouzbékistan
...
Only white exhaust smoke at 3500 meters during the first 15 minutes...
We continue to reach Sydney!
Thanks++,
Nicolas
