This morning i asked SWMBO (born in soviet Latvia) and she has never heard of "birch-booze" as well.

It is of Baltic origin and during the last centuries was a popular rural drink in Russia to the extent that whole forests of young Birch trees were killed by the peasants who tapped the trees too much. One can also produce this strong drink from Walnut and Sycamore trees.
